This is really easy and inexpensive wreath. You can use white, brown or white dyed in your choice of color coffee filters. I added gold craft paint to the ends when they were still in packaged form.
A great tip for making wreath: go to the plumbing department at Home Depot or Lowes and grab a six foot long piece of foam tubing for $.97!! Snip the length you want with scissors and duct tape the ends together. Voila! You have a really inexpensive wreath form. You can probably get three to four wreaths out of one piece.
Grab your hot glue gun on a low setting and attach the filters with a dot of glue at the bottom, bunch together and attach close together. I hung mine over an old window frame I found at an antique shop.

Love your wreath and thanks so much for the tip about making the base itself. Great idea and would be soooo much cheaper than buying a form Ü
ReplyDeleteCame over from Frou Frou Decor. You are genius figuring out the foam tubing! I usually get wreath forms at the $1 store but sometimes want bigger ones and this solves that! I'd better follow someone so smart :)
ReplyDeleteVery clever, love this idea and your wreath turned out great.

I love it! I would never had guessed those were coffee filters.
ReplyDeleteI am so going to make that. I have a ton of white filters I no longer use, and I think I'll tea stain them. I have a question. Did you just put one dot of glue on and glue down the middle dot of the coffee filter, then do that all over so they were all crammed together? I'm crafty challenged and need things spelled out to me lol!
ReplyDeleteI love using common materials in uncommon ways, too. Your coffee filter wreath is fabulous! I'm featuring it tonight for last week's Tips and Tricks highlights.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to my party. I would love to have you join me each week.

ReplyDeleteThanks and amazing wreath!

What a great idea - LOve the wreath, the tied ribbon makes it!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I am never buying a wreath form again! Thanks for the great tip.
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a brilliant idea to use the foam tubing! I actually made a wreath out of old book pages last night using the tubing trick and it worked perfectly! Thanks for the great ideas. I don't write my own blog but I am a follower!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the foam tip! wow! amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the foam tip. It's absolutely brilliant!
ReplyDeleteBE CAREFUL WHEN WORKING WITH THAT FOAM! It melts easily! If you're ever worried that a glue that you're using will melt the foam (hot glue, gorilla glue, etc), then cover it with duct or medical tape. Trust me. I'm a professional. :D
ReplyDeleteFoam tubing wreath form? You are brilliant!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I linked you from my blog danggoodfinds.com. Feel free to grab a featured on button. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this idea! I have used different items for wreaths before but never thought about the tubing from HD...makes it even more of a reason to continue to do them. I also linked you here on my blog http://moosenmelts.blogspot.com/2011/08/nesting-gone-south.html. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteHi!! Don't know if you know but your little tip about using the foam tubing is all over pinterest! Thanks!! I have a problem though. I can't find the tubing at HD or Lowes!? And when I explain it to them, they have no idea what I'm talking about. Does the tubing have a specific name? Help! Thanks!
ReplyDeletestopping in by way of Pinterest... YOU ARE A GENIUS. love this idea. GOING TO DO THIS FROM NOW ON. winks-jen
ReplyDeleteAnother who found this on pinterest. I bought the tubing but am having a problem with it. I can NOT get it to shape into a circle. It just bends all weird. Any tips?
ReplyDeleteI am also having difficulty shaping the wreath. Any tips would be appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI also can't get it to stay in a nice circle...it likes to "kink" in some places...tips would be great!
ReplyDeleteHI Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know I featured your foam wreath on my blog. I just love the idea and plan to make one myself. If you'd like stop by and grab a "I'm a real crafty mama" button to share that you were featured!
Have a great day,
Heather @ http://realcraftymama.blogspot.com/
How do you get it so round? My tubing sort of goes all bulbous and looks more like a triangle than a lovely circle. I see I am not the only one with such problems, good to hear.
ReplyDeleteI think the issue with not being able to get the pipe insulation round has to do with the diameter of the insulation used. At least that's the issue I had. At first I used 3/4 inch diameter tubing and it was bulging and wouldn't get very round. Then I got 1/2 inch diameter tubing and it bends into a beautiful circle without any issues. Hope this helps some others!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great idea of using a foam tube as a wreath! I did this to make a ribbon wreath and it turned out great. I found you off of Pinterest and sent people there to see your post. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteTammy
http://tobyandtammythornton.blogspot.com/2011/10/halloween-ribbon-wreath-with-quick.html
Love this idea and in trying to execute I am failing lol! My piping is not making a nice neat circle like yours, in beding at certain points....HELP! Did you have a trick?
ReplyDeleteI had a similar problem like about. i bought the thing from lowes, plumbing dept, cut it and it wont shape into a circle. any advice? it keeps folding in half, instead of rounding out ;) FAIL!
ReplyDeleteI think issues of keeping it round have to do with the diameter of the tubing. I used 1 1/4" tubing that is actually hollow (not sure if that makes a difference). I didn't have any problem creating a round shape. Also, the length (from memory) was probably around 30" long (maybe a little less) after I cut it with scissors. I think the wider in diameter it is, the less it will want to bend in half. Hope this helps!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I can't wait to give this a try, I'll link folks over here from my blog once i give it a try.......I'm over at yourdesignpartner.com/blog have an awesome day!
ReplyDeleteUsed the idea of the pipe wrap wreath, then wrapped in strips of felt, then wrapped a "pearl" garland from the Dollar Store. Added a felt poinsetta - beautiful! Thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteUsed this for a bunch of yarn wrapped wreaths that I did this Christmas. Just did a post on it on my blog (and included a link to this page). Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeletejust started following your blog...hope you will come visit me and follow me back at: http://carrollcraftycreations.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing! I love dollar store craft projects with the antique feel.
ReplyDeleteThe foam can also be used to decorate mantles, open the foam, close around the mantle edging, then decorate! You could decorate one differently for every season!
ReplyDeleteLove your ideas!:-)
Barb
Your idea of using foam tubing is brilliant! I noticed that the Dollar Store stopped selling their large (round-edged)foam wreaths.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I guess I am a dummy..I do not understand how to put the filter on.....sigh
ReplyDeleteit hot glued on
Deleteif you dry out your used coffee filters and do this, it will smell wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYou can cut material with pinking shears and use also.
ReplyDeleteI bought the foam but it seemed to bend in half in four spots, where it needed to bend the most, when I tried to make it circle. I now have a diamond shaped form....which honestly I have a fabulous ideas for BUT I was looking forward to having an inexpensive wreath form. Are there different thicnknesses in the foam? Maybe I bought one that was too thin? Great blog by the way!
ReplyDeleteIs your pip liner hollow? When I did this, the pipe liner turned into a triangle because it bent and would not make a circle. Tips?? What am I doing wrong?
ReplyDeleteHow would you add a big red christmas bow to this?? It's so full I can't figure out out to get a bow to stay on. Any ideas???
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!!!!
I also had the same problem with the tubing bending! Great idea in theory but can't get it to work!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have time to read all the posts so if this a repeat suggestion I apologize. I made mine out of those swimming noodles from the Dollar Tree! Bends to a perfect shape whether you want round or oval wreath.
ReplyDeleteSwimming noodles are the answer
ReplyDeleteGet the swimming noodles now before summer is over. Dollar Tree will pack em up soon. So pliable. Trust me, problem solved.
ReplyDeleteanother use for this is bedside toilet cushions the metal is cold and hard. just open the seam and pop it on..duct tape it closed. works for comfort on the hands on top of a walker or cane. my husband had cancer and it made his life better.

Foam forms must be very popular these days. They're certainly priced that way. I saw a really fun idea for an outdoor Christmas decoration that required large Styrofoam balls. A certain chain craft store (we'll call it "Mitchell's) had them. The idea was cute but not at $18.99 each!!!
